Getting To Know...Something Like This
Wednesday, 20th April, 2011
Something Like This burst onto the local scene a few short years ago and their energy and sheer ability as musicians made them an instant hit with punters at pubs and clubs across Canberra. The four-piece first played at The Dickson Tradies in February of 2010 and have since been used as the feature act at many of our big events. Members of the band include Don (lead vocals/keyboards/rhythm guitar), Rob (drums/vocals), Dave (bass guitar/vocals) and Rohan (lead guitar/vocals).
How long have you been playing together?
This will be our third year as our current line-up, although the musical experience in the band goes back almost 30 years. As an example, our drummer Rob had 4 years of formal training with the Townsville Youth Orchestra as well as working at the North Queensland Opera and Music Theatre Company. He then formed the band Something Egyptian. Playing 80's rock, they toured the circuit in Queensland and northern New South Wales for 3 years, playing support for some of the nation's biggest acts. After which he spent 2 years in a band in Brisbane called Hype playing 90's and dance music. The experience is deep across the band, and all the members (and patrons) really appreciate the level of professionalism we provide.
Do either of you play in other bands?
Each of the guys in the band have performed in other bands at one point or another, and although you may see our faces filling in for other bands around Canberra occasionally, Something Like This is our main focus. Don also performs with Dave in the Something Like This Duo, and you might catch him performing solo from time to time.
How would you describe your show?
We are a Canberra-based smoothie of choice hits with a spotlight on artists, picks of the hottest tunes, and medley mixes that take your breath away. We cover an incredible amount of ground, and aim to bring the finest music to the ears of as many people as possible.
What music do you listen to?
Each of the guys has different tastes, which is what we believe contributes to our adaptability in playing to so many different audiences and venues. Rob likes Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Daly Wilson, Jon Farris (INXS), Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil). Whilst Rohan prefers The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, The Doors, Eric Clapton, and Bob Marley. Don listens to Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Jason Mraz and John Mayer. And Dave loves The Foo Fighters, Powderfinger and Johnny Cash.
What makes a good show?
We believe that every show is a good show, and we do our best to relate to the audience and adapt our performance accordingly. We find that the atmosphere of the venue is also crucial in order for the audience to truly experience our music.
Anything else you want The Tradies members to know?
We've always loved playing at The Dickson Tradies, it's such a great environment and the staff are fantastic. If you consider that the band plays regularly at 15 venues around Canberra, we view The Dickson Tradies as one of best clubs for live entertainment. We're glad to see the renovations complete, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone the next time we perform.
