Lighting Up Lyneham: A Winter Celebration of Community, Creativity and Connection
There’s something magic about a chilly Canberra evening lit up by glowing lanterns, laughter, and the hum of neighbours coming together. That’s exactly the kind of joy Light Up Lyneham promises to deliver again this year, when the festival returns to the Lyneham Shops and Wetlands on Saturday 2 August, from 3pm to 8pm.
Now in its seventh year, this free, community-led event has grown into a cherished tradition for locals across the inner north. Whether it’s your first time or your seventh, expect a night full of colour, culture and good vibes - with something for every age.
And once again, The Tradies Dickson is proud to support this vibrant local celebration and help bring the magic to life.
A Lantern Walk Like No Other
The signature Sunset Lantern Walk kicks off at 5:30pm, led by the enchanting Canberra Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance troupe. Expect colour, music, and movement as the procession winds its way from the Lyneham shops to the wetlands, where glowing art installations will light up the night.
“This year I’m particularly excited about the wetlands displays that people will walk past on the Sunset Lantern Walk,” says organiser Trevor Vickers. “We probably have about double the number of displays compared to last year, and they’re shaping up to form a real spectacle.”
From community groups like the 13th Canberra Scouts, St Joseph’s Primary, and the Black Mountain Girl Guides, to professional artists like Jocelyn Barbic, the installations promise to be as diverse and delightful as Lyneham itself.
Food, Fun and Something for Everyone
The entertainment lineup is packed with live music, street performers, and roving acts - from the bucket-drumming kids of St Joseph’s, to Prism Jazz Ensemble, Blue Angel, and even an ABBA tribute choir. There’ll be slackliners, magicians, caricature artists, and even the ACT Fire Truck for the little ones.
With over 40 stalls offering everything from Malaysian roti canai and Brazilian BBQ, to mulled wine from Old Canberra Inn, it’s safe to say your tastebuds are in for a treat too.
Win $250 in the Photo Comp
For the first time ever, festivalgoers can also get involved in the brand-new Photo Competition.
“We’re looking for photos that capture the spirit of the event,” says Trevor. “And we’re hoping a few people will tackle the challenge of taking photos under the difficult lighting conditions of the Lantern Walk and the wetlands.” The winning snapper will take home $250 - not bad for a night out with your camera.
A Greener Festival
As with previous years, Light Up Lyneham is keeping sustainability front and centre. Attendees are encouraged to BYO crockery, cutlery, and cups, with a community wash-up station on-site thanks to the team at SEE-Change WasteLess.
It’s a simple way to enjoy the festivities and leave a lighter footprint - something we at The Tradies wholeheartedly support.
A Night to Remember
For us, being part of Light Up Lyneham is about more than just giving back. It’s about celebrating the community we’re proud to be part of—one lantern, one song, one smile at a time.
So grab your coat, bring your crew, and join us for a night that promises to warm your heart—even in the middle of winter.
