Because Nobody Can Do It Alone: Supporting Our Community Through Dementia Action Week
15-20 September 2025
At The Dickson Tradies, community means everything. We look out for each other, lend a hand when it’s needed, and make sure no one gets left behind. So in the lead-up to Dementia Action Week (15–21 September), we’re proud to stand alongside Dementia Australia in calling for real, lasting change - because nobody can do it alone.
Right now, more than 433,300 Australians are living with dementia. That number is expected to grow to over 812,500 by 2054. It's already the leading cause of death for Australian women, and soon, it will be the leading cause of death for all Australians. These are sobering facts - but behind every number is a real person, a family, a story.
That includes people right here in Canberra, right here in our community, our club.
Dementia doesn’t just affect older Australians. Around 29,000 people under 65 are living with younger onset dementia. And an estimated 1,500 children live with childhood dementia - conditions that deeply impact families, friends, and whole communities.
That’s why Dementia Australia is calling on the 48th Parliament to take bold and immediate action - action that puts people at the centre of care and support. They’re pushing for:
A national brain health campaign to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
Specialist navigation support so no one gets lost in the system.
A fit-for-purpose dementia workforce that’s properly trained, resourced, and ready to meet the growing need.
Art Beyond Memory: A Creative Window into the Dementia Experience
As part of this year’s Dementia Action Week, the "Art Beyond Memory" exhibition will be held from 15–28 September 2025 at The Link Gallery, 1 McClymont Way, Strathnairn ACT.
This powerful exhibition highlights the lived experience of dementia through art - offering a creative lens into the emotional depth, identity, and connection that exists beyond memory loss.
Local Action, Lasting Change
The newly formed Canberra Dementia Alliance is a collective of locals committed to creating a dementia-friendly community - a place where individuals living with dementia are respected, understood, supported, and empowered to live well and stay connected.
It’s about creating spaces - like The Tradies - where everyone feels they belong.
If you’ve been affected by dementia, or you’re passionate about supporting others, the Canberra Dementia Alliance would love to hear from you. Whether you’re an advocate, a carer, or someone with lived experience, your voice matters.
You can reach them directly at info@cbrda.com.au.
Because when it comes to facing dementia, none of us should have to do it alone. And at The Tradies, we’re committed to being part of the support that makes a difference.
