Empowering Women Through Combat Sports: The Tradies’ Ongoing Commitment to Inclusion and Community
At The Tradies, we believe sport should be welcoming, supportive, and accessible to everyone. It builds confidence, creates connection, and helps people feel part of something bigger. That’s why we’re proud to continue our support of the Canberra Combat Sports Association (CCSA), as they expand their women’s program in 2025.
Last year’s Women’s Boxing pilot was a powerful step forward. Over 30 women took part in free development classes, led by a team of strong, experienced female coaches—including a special appearance from Monique Suraci, Australia’s Olympic boxing representative at 51kg for the Paris Games. The program created something special: a space where women could build their skills, support one another, and grow in confidence—together.
Now in 2025, the program is growing—and reaching even more women in our community.
More Classes, More Connection
This year, CCSA is offering three women-only combat sports programs, all completely free and designed to meet a wide range of needs:
Boxing: Two weekly classes, including a Sunday night session tailored for women who wear hijabs. For privacy and comfort, the space will be closed to men during this session so participants can train freely.
Wrestling: One weekly class, also designed with hijab-wearing participants in mind, ensuring a safe and culturally appropriate environment.
Kickboxing: Two weekly classes, with one session specifically focused on supporting disadvantaged or at-risk adolescent women.
Every detail—from timing to access—is built around making sure every woman feels safe, welcome, and supported.
Support That Goes Beyond the Mat
Participants in the boxing and kickboxing programs will receive free training t-shirts and hand wraps, while wrestling participants will also receive t-shirts. These aren’t just practical items—they represent belonging and pride in being part of something meaningful.
The program is also investing in women as leaders. With a focus on developing new female coaches in both boxing and wrestling, this initiative is helping build a stronger, more inclusive future for combat sports in the ACT.
Standing Strong Together
This is what community support looks like: showing up, breaking down barriers, and making sure everyone has the chance to grow and thrive. We’re proud to stand beside CCSA and all the women stepping into these spaces with strength and determination.
If you’re looking for connection, confidence, or just a chance to try something new—these programs could be for you.
